Donsol - swimming with whale sharks

Hello fellas,

i am heading down to Philippines sometimes around April this year and amongst others attractions I am keen on visiting Donsol thus doing a swimming-with-whale-sharks trip. As it lies, I%26#39;m bound to take one of the operators. Should I organize it already from Manila or as late as in Donsol? Do you have any specific tips?

Most importantly, I can swim and snorkel but I am not one of best swimmers. I am bit worrying as I%26#39;ve read somewhere that this trip and adventure is only for skilfull and fit swimmers. Is that right? Any personal experience about this factor to share?

Jirikoo,

Best to already organize it from Manila as swimming with the whale sharks is hugely popular and has a short window. That way your tour guide can already meet you at the airport and also avoid the possibility of not having a tour to go with.

Also, you might want to reconsider your travel date as April is quite late for the whales - March is the optimum time to go there. Plus April is full of Philippine holidays so you avoid the tourists.

Lastly, it is best to practise your swimming as the whales are fast (lol). Plus visibility might not be so good so faster swimming is definitely a must to be able to keep up with the whales.

What is the best season to see whale sharks and manta rays?

Whale Sharks and Manta Rays are most abundant from December to May.

----------------

At this time of the year, the currents in the area are strongest and become an ideal feeding ground for the Whale Sharks and Manta Rays.

Am I guaranteed to see Whale Sharks and Manta Rays?

During the feeding season which normally falls from December to May, there is a 99% chance of citing Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. On good days, it will not be a surprise to see at least 20 Whale Sharks and 15 Manta Rays.

Hope this helps.

The whale shark season is posted from December to April with peak season in Feb/Mar.

You can organize it through Eco Donsol Travel well in advance of your trip. As far as tips: Just book it! Swimming with these gentle giants is on the top of my lifetime experiences.

I wouldn%26#39;t have to worry about being skillful or fit. The guides and boats position you in such a way that the whales come to you and depending on the speed of the whale, you can either let them pass you buy or just swim along with them at your own pace. You%26#39;re bound to swim and watch quite a few of them.

The guides and spotters are there to ensure greatest probability and frequency of swimming with the whale sharks.

Have fun!
