Fishing ban around BORAcay

Quote: ';The Philippine Navy is important in the protection of marine resources after the local government of Malay, which has geographical and political jurisdiction of this resort island, recently declared a permanent fishing ban.';

I still see some local guys (or are they workers) early morning going out with their small banca or paddel boat with moskito nets. I don%26#39;t think a fishing ban can be implemented, if the LGU makes no effort to control the area between the beach and the coral reef. The navy cannot patrol there.

Anyway - it is at least a beginning...

alot of these that u see go fishing go away from boracay, like towards carabao and tablas.

I do not think their fishing is done in Tablas or Carabao or Romblon because the fish are so small that the smallest net are not good anymore. The caught fish are as small as baby sardines which means that very soon there will be nothing to fish anymore!

And yes, true, every morning or sunset at times, they are still on the beach getting their baby fish out of the net.

It is another law to just say : ';we ve done our job, we create another rule';. This is a law created for press release purpose and to look good in the national newspapers. It is a law made to earn poggi points only.

Problem is no one gives a damn about implementation.

Bura,

..having some experience fishing as a commercial fisherman..surprise fellow posters..I am aware of well meaning regulations ..lol..that often are a day late and a dollar short

..obviously the fish stocks must be depleted for them to impose such a drastic ban

..conservation is the answer to which I have had some experience..of course practice and lisence are often different

..this would have interested my father greatly ...god rest his soul...he was a simple fisherman

Rob

Yes - Boracays Coral reefs have been under attack since ever - first with dynamite and cyanide fishing, later with global warming, bleaching/crown of thorns and of course indiscriminately anchoring and braking of corals to sell them as souvenirs. And the overfishing, meaning fishing with moskito nets for the last remaining tiny fishes diesn%26#39;t help. The LG, of course, is not aware of the problem and has no programe to do something.

The sea rangers still patrol the snorkel spots, collect money from swimmers and turn a blind eye to the fishermen on the reef right in front of their face.

Yes, they still fish here. Guy got out of a skiff yesterday morning and strung up a mish-mash of fish types on his selling-pole.
