Boracay House (boracayhouse.com)

Hello,

Does anyone have reviews or comments about Boracay House. I know it is on the other side of the island, Bulabog Beach...is this a nice beach?

Also, has anyone had any bad experiences with Boracay House or has heard anything?

Everything sounds good so far from what they are telling me, and the rate is very good. I just want to make sure that I%26#39;m making the right decision in booking with them...

Any info would be great!

Jimmy,

You might want to read the comments by boracaybill and davi-boy in the boracay butterfly garden post.

While I am sure the accomodation is probably ok...I find the conversations regarding surface water/sewage runoff to be disconcerting to say the least.

You may wish to factor this information into your decision making process.

Boracay House (boracayhouse.com)

Hi

Did you end up staying at Boracay House? Do you recommend this place?

Thanks

The comments by boracaybill and davi-boy in the boracay butterfly garden post does not help much as im not able to find anything concerning this. I have read that Boracay has sewage problems in general, but nothing particular about this area.

Does anyone know if the sewage problems are about to be solved or if the islands waters slowly get infected by this sewage problems? I read somewhere that some canadians was trying to sort Boracay麓s sewage problems out.

Unless i find a better option/offer and unless i hear bad news about boracayhouse i think i will go ahead and book it within a few days. But would like to have suggestions of any other private houses for rent at 6-800usd/month.

%26lt; But would like to have suggestions of any other private houses for rent at 6-800usd/month. %26gt;

Did you browse the the vacation house offers at the BBC website already ? %26gt;%26gt; www.bbcboracay.com/listprop.php?type=vh

Bulabog Beach most certainly does have pollution problems. Not with raw sewage but road drainage. stinky water running into the sea. Don%26#39;t swim there!

the Funboard Windsurfing cup was even cancelled this year due to this problem.

Thank you for your comments!

I checked the website you suggested and Boracayhouse seems to be the cheapest house to rent exept for one house. Also i got a 5% discount offer from the listed prices on www.boracayhouse.com.

The waterproblems at the Bulabog Beach sounds bad. But as i understand it, then everybody is going to Whitebeach to swim 10min from Bulabog anyway, so unless you go swimming there, there should be no problem.

Thanks, i appreciate your replies!

Lago De Oro Wakeboard Park Calatagan, Batangas

Greetings all,

Does anyone know how to get to the Lago de Oro Wakeboard Park from Manila? How to get in touch with the park? What are the accommodations like nearby?

This Balikbayan thanks you :)

Boracay Beware. Patrice Sloan Villa Warning

Avoid wasting your hard-earned money and holiday time renting Patrice Sloan%26#39;s Villa on Borocay.

You may be considering renting Patrice Sloan Villa based on the owner%26#39;s web site postings. We did, and followed through with a booking in December 2008. We left a few days after arriving. It was better to leave the place and lose our money than stay in what turned out to be one of the worst holiday rentals you can imagine.

What the owner%26#39;s advertising fails to disclose is the fact the villa is located in what is essentially a slum. Tragically, people around the world are faced with horrific living conditions and many of us do what we can as relatively rich westerners to help with the underprivileged at home and abroad. The question is, do you want to spend your holiday in such a neighborhood? On the owner%26#39;s web postings, carefully angled photos of the Patrice Sloan Villa - which itself is a very fine house - crop out the corrugated tin roofed shacks next door, the plethora of garbage strewn about, the farm animals roaming the streets with their feces everywhere, the gangs of shirtless children marauding day and night. A giant septic-smelling pond sits across the street - beside which is something that would be laughable at best, if you didn%26#39;t spend your holiday time and money across the street from it: a cock-fighting farm. Yes, meters away from the house are located literally dozens of roosters being groomed for cock fights, sitting out of doors day and night. And if you think one rooster making noise is an issue, try dozens, day and night. This noise is inescapable anywhere in the villa so peace and quiet are out of the question. And if you think roosters start crowing at dawn, try again - more like 3:30 am until well after nightfall. For anyone with animal rights concerns, having animals in your full view throughout your holiday which are being groomed to be abused for the pleasure of gamblers is just plain depressing.

In such a neighborhood, you may think that extra attention has been paid by the owner to securing the villa. Every lock on every window was broken. While bars exist on the lower story windows (and you%26#39;ve got to ask yourself why they are necessary to begin with) there are no bars on the upper story windows. Neighborhood residents (or perhaps not neighborhood residents…) marched through the yard at will. A fence surrounding the villa can be easily scaled - we watched people do it. There is no safe in the house for passports, cameras, wallets, etc. So if you are concerned about your physical security or the security of your possessions, our advice is to be wary.

After having such a unexpected and unpleasant stay, we complained to the owner. While we asked for a refund, we really weren%26#39;t expecting one; we thought at least though the owner would acknowledge the issues. Like the worst of any bad service experience, the individual responsible for the lack of disclosure about the villa%26#39;s setting and the poor state of security in the house simply took no responsibility. Tough luck, essentially was the owner%26#39;s response. No wonder the owner demands payment in full before arrival...

We went to Borocay at the worst time of the year for crowds, and the weather was relatively poor - neither issue of course the responsibility of the owner of Patrice Sloan%26#39;s villa. We felt though that posting a full disclosure of our experience would help any future holiday renters know exactly what they were getting into if they rented the place. The owner of Patrice Sloan%26#39;s villa certainly isn%26#39;t prepared to do that…

You%26#39;ve got choices on where to stay. Why risk it?

Boracay Beware. Patrice Sloan Villa Warning

several points, first you no doubt chose this place based on low prices first, second the area you describe is somewhat common with the off beach areas in some place and what you perceived as slums may be just families living their lives, next you did not say anything happened to you or that you had a problem while there........and next, I suggest you put your comments under their hotel specific feedback page. Any one last question..why did you not check your own advice to check the place you were to stay at...we all know websites can be misleading. Price ruled your choice..

Boracay Beware. Patrice Sloan Villa Warning

I find no problem with this post being posted of this forum. I would recommend reposting under hotels where it might reach more people considering this facility. Sorry you had such a bad experience and hope that this experience did not ruin your whole visit to Boracay.

Leftovertoo: you assume again and assuming makes an a.s.s. out of you. How do you know it was the price why Canadiantraveler40 rented Sloanes villa? did you talk to him outside this Forum? Maybe he choose it because it looked serene in the web site pictures. Shouldn%26#39;t we ask him before blaming him?

You are very fast in a.s.s.uming.

burpa, I suggest you look at the website and check rates first. Its my opinion........and like your opinion I am entitled to it after doing a bit of research.

I guess it%26#39;s pretty common on off-site locations. As far as severity and situation on what you see, pass through, noise, etc, varies and depends on how the management handles the situation. I checked the website and there%26#39;s only a picture of the building facade and the inside and nothing else from the outside except for the main beach. There was no mention of 24-hour security but then it should be the standard for all guest houses. That%26#39;s why I don%26#39;t rely mostly on websites as they could be decieving.

The Philippines is a developing country and sad to say, you will always find ';horrific living conditions';. But I think Boracay, a major tourist destination is unregulated and clearly there%26#39;s no zoning for commercial businesses and residential areas. There%26#39;s just too much going on and sad to say the island will loose her image in the future if everything remains unregulated. As far as environmental issue, I guess that%26#39;s a whole different story.

Leftover: opinion and assumption are two things.....

canadiantravellor40,

...I am sorry that you had a less than enjoyable experience

...of the location ...as a word to the wise...it is true that you need to do your homework first

...obviously your security concerns were valid

..as to the location it can indeed be a shock to see living conditions in for instance a squatters area especially if you have not experienced it before.

..most foriegners are culture shocked initially when they see how people live

..as for the roosters well they are a part of the local areas and during many of my trips are quite reliable as an alarm clock

...Boracay is a lovely place and I am sure that if you had found accomodation at Daves Straw Hat Inn,

Island Jewel,Hey Jude,or other budget minded resorts you would have a more positive experience

..thanks for the post..forewarned is forearmed

Rob

Regarding the roosters, that is not a surpise to me. When I was in Aklan Jan 2007 I stayed in Lezo, near Kalibo, for a few days. There were many homes where cocks were being raised, and they would start crowing about 3 am. This coming trip I am bringing earplugs :)

  • asian spirit flights

we just got back in manila from caticlan. we were on board flight 879 of asian spirit 1pm. we had a very uncomfortable flight...it was as though a drunk driver was in chrage! from the time we sat down till take off...it was like riding a roller coaster and can you imagine the landing....what horror. all the passengers were alert and feeling the discomfort.though the trip to boracay from manila flight was comendable last feb 8..now i have mixed feelings about rifing with asian spirit again....has anyone experienced this?

    asian spirit flights

    Dear ManilaLPD,

why not file a report or complaint with Asian Spirit, and kindly post Asian Spirit%26#39;s response (if any)? I%26#39;m sure many would be interested. Is it not also possible, though, that turbulence or other conditions (storm, etc.) may have caused the erratic flight?

    GeoVan

    asian spirit flights

That happened to me when my hubby %26amp; I went to Boracay in 2003. What do you expect, the plane is turbo propelled? My husband swore he will never take that flight again. And since it was my idea, I got all the blame LOL

Fast forward to 2006, my sister and her friends were clutching rosaries on their flight to Caticlan. So rattled they were that they switched to PAL for their return flight to Manila.

I have never flown with Asian Spirit Before but from your flight description, As 3cia mentioned the fleet Asian Spirit run are a little more outdated than both PAL and CEB. Being a short flight and Turbo Prop aircraft means that pilots decide not to cruise at a high altitude, its a waste climbing ( having a higher fuel Burnoff) then just descending, As alot of the time due to the location of the Philippines in relation to the Equator your going to get bad weather, thunderstorms with there associated turbulence lighting and heavy rain. I doubt you%26#39;ll ever get a smooth flight on that particular leg Manila-Caticlan.

That was a good technical explanation JetPilot. In fairness, we experienced a bumpy ride on board a PAL flight in 2002. We were seated at the tailend of the plane. It was really like on a roller coaster. It was sunny but suddenly, there was a turbulence. My friends were just laughing it of, maybe because we knew we were in a ';bigger plane';?

Jetpilot: are you a computer pilot? I%26#39;ve had dozens of very smooth and quiet flights in the Philippines, despite location to Equator, trade winds, monsun winds, etc.

I am a licenced Australian pilot, I never said all flights would be rough! Even though you fly in a larger plane it doesn%26#39;t really make all that much difference, turbulence isn%26#39;t scared of the big planes, lol. From my studies in meteorology there are many factors which will determine if a particular route is smooth or not, things like time of the day or year in which you fly, afternoons seem to be the worst time to fly in the tropics. Those big puffy clouds you see in the skies over the Philippines often before a thunderstorm starts is usually a good indication to expect a bumpy ride. As I said though there are many factors which will determine the smoothness of a particular route.

You are correct. I had besides of the majority quiet flights, quite some scary flights with landing in a terrible tropical thunderstorm, turning back in Caticlan back to Manila due to sudden very low and very dark clouds, rain and wind, etc. However, these are the disadvantages of flying and that not only in the Philippines.

i rode asian spirit to caticlan last december even with many negative feedbacks years ago. flight went well even with the turboprop plane. on our way back, we encountered a ';turbulence'; but we almost didnt feel it.

i rode an even smaller plane (19 seater) to palawan and that went well as well.

    ManilaLpd,

the hard landing may also have been due to the fact that Caticlan has a relatively short runway.

Cebu Pacific and Asian Spirit are presently collaborating on extending the runway in Caticlan.

    GeoVan

We are planning to take the Asian Spirit flight to Caticlan on June 1-4, but after reading this thread, I%26#39;m kinda scared since we%26#39;ll be bringing our toddler with us and she might get scared. I just learned that Asian Spirit has two kinds of flights to Caticlan- one that takes about an hour and the other one a jet plane that takes about 35 minutes. I am leaning towards taking the aircraft with the shorter travel time, but would the smoothness of the ride be affected by this? Also, the quicker jet plane is bigger that their regular plane in the sense that the jet can accommodate 100 pax. Please advise whether or not I should go with Asian Spirit or just opt for Cebu-Pacific%26#39;s Caticlan route. Any feedback on CEB will be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks super.

  • what to do and where to stay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

Hi i%26#39;m Del. I am now a resident of Puerto Princesa and been enjoying the place for quite sometime now. I may give suggestions to those who are planning to visit the Philippines%26#39; cleanest and greenest city on where to stay, what to do or what to see while here. Don%26#39;t hesitate to ask questions, i%26#39;ll be very glad to help and to give info the best that i can.

what to do and where to stay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

hi! my boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Palawan for 3 days/2 nights Nov. 29-Dec. 1. What is the cheapest way to spend a vacation there? and what do you recommend? is it better if we contact a travel agency? or will it be cheaper to just go there, find a good place to stay (with aircon and nice view; preferably a resort), and do fun activities. We are in a tight budget coz we are both students but we really would like to go and do something special for that long weekend. hope you can help us. i would really appreciate it.

Did you hear about any estuarine crocodile attacks on locals or scuba divers in the area? We want to check out the area pretty soon and also do some scuba but we heard that Philippines has a small population of salties. Thanks a lot.

    Mabuhay and Aloha pisunkin,

There are salties in the Philippines, but further south. There is a croc farm in Princesa that has both Salties and the Philippine Croc. However, there are no salties in Puerto Princesa. There is a mega-saltie that ate an 11-year old girl two years ago at the southern tip of Palawan, a majestic and evil brute, but it will forever stay in the farm. The Mayor loves animals and when he heard the story he asked the mayor where the attack occured to not kill the saltie so he could take it in the farm.

    4) Any regular public transportation from San Vicente back to PP?

Hi Del!Im ryan from manila. Me and 4 of my friends are going to puerto princesa this jan 20, 2009 we still have not yet decided where to stay. We are not after the luxury of a hotel all we need is a decent and comfortable place to sleep at night in our 3 days stay because for sure we will be out most of the time enjoying the place for the rest of our stay. Can you suggest a place where we can stay that is cheap or reasonably priced. Please reply through my email at oliver0924@yahoo.com if you could also include suggestions on what to do or see in your place that would be very much appreciated. Hope to hear from you. Thanks

    Hi Del

We are planning to come there in March this year. Family of 4 with children 11 and 13. Wanting a nice resort with beach and pool and easy access to other adventures. Any good suggestions are welcome

hi, del! we are a group of 5 going to PP on March 12-14, is there a place you recommend where we can stay? we%26#39;re on a tight budget and we%26#39;re looking for a nice but cheap place to stay, I want it to be near the city proper so we can just walk in the market. Our itinerary is: day 1 - arrival at 4 pm is to visit the market and walk in the near by place, 2nd day is to the UR and on the 3rd day our flight back to Manila, is there any other activities you can suggest considering the limited time we have?

you may reply to my email add at marygracecfrancisco@yahoo.com

thanks so much, i%26#39;ll greatly appreciate your advice. :)

Hi Del!@ we%26#39;ll be visiting PP this March, but i%26#39;m worried not to complete/enjoy much becoz of our limited time. we%26#39;ll be arriving @ 4:30pm (monday) and will leave @ 10:15am (wednesday). Can you give us advice on how can we spend and enjoy our trip with this limited time. Thanks! :-)

We find it not easy to plan a trip to El Nido cuz of the 8hrs boat ride from Coron to El Nido so we are re-working our itinerary. We booked flight out of Coron by Seair (while seats are still available) to Puerto Princesa. Now we have 14 days to plan an itinerary with Puerto P. as our base. We still want to go to El Nido. Fort Wally Shuttle Co. for 6 hrs seem to be interesting. How do we book this transport van. We have to reserve a day ahead?

We plan to go from El Nido to Port Barton and stay 3/4 days. Then from Port Barton, take the boat or bus (which is better?

We%26#39;d like to stay in Sabang also for a couple of nights.

    Boracay In Feb

    Hi,

Me and my wife are coming to Boracay in Feb.

We are flying from Manila to Caticlan on Philippine Airlines. Our tickets say 10kg each for luggage. Are they strict on this policy? If we were to bring lets say 20kg each would this be a problem. I undertand that we will be charged excess but just want to make sure i dont run into any difficulties. I cant wait to get to Boracay.

    Thanks in advance.

    Boracay In Feb

    Yes, they are very strict.

    Boracay In Feb

most people over pack for Boracay and I suspect that if what you carry is mostly clothes, you will think you over packed as well.

I think you%26#39;re asking will they not allow the excess baggage on the plane at all?

    What airline are you flying?

Thats correct. I am flying Philippine Airlines.

they will allow the extra weight on the plane, but you will have to pay. What are we talking about here, dive equipment or Kiteboarding stuff or underwear. How much extra can you really have and as I said earlier, most over pack for the island.

  • Beach Weather??

Hello! Will it be warm enough for a beach day trip to Subic this time of year? Been checking out the forecast and it shows that there%26#39;s a small chance of rain during the next week and a half; do you think that will be a problem? Or does it usually only rain intermittently this time of year and probably wouldn%26#39;t ruin our day at the beach?

Any help/ insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

    Beach Weather??

    Hi,

It rains intermittently and the forecasts are never accurate so I wouldn%26#39;t rely on them. A trip Subic is fine now although it%26#39;s been quite cool recently and will be until February according to PAGASA, the weather agency.

    Beach Weather??

hi! Zerk is right. The weather right now seems cooler than last yr and it will further go on till february. So may i suggest that if you want a nice hot, sunny weather come visit around late March till April.

Thanks for your replies. I arrived in Manila yesterday morning and it does seem much cooler than the other times I%26#39;ve visited...

Cool as in what kind of temp? I will be arriving in two days and will be heading to Palawan really looking for sun and warmth...no rain, please!!!

I would say temps are in the 70%26#39;s to mid 80%26#39;s, very comfortable. Its been getting warmer everyday though. Its not sweltering hot and very humid; last time I was here a couple years ago, it was in the 90%26#39;s maybe even 100%26#39;s. But that was during late Oct to mid Nov - so definitely cooler in comparison to what I remember. I personally think its warm enough for the beach, and no rain yet since Friday, but that%26#39;s in Manila.

  • Bus from Manila to Clark Airport

I have just visited Manila via Clark Airport by Tiger flight. Before my visit, I was worry and asked about how to return to Clark from Manila by bus, but got no response. I knew I could take a Philtranco bus from the airport to Manila. But on the website of Philtranco, the last bus leaves Manila (Pasay) at 12 pm which is definately too early for my flight (ETD 8:45 pm).

Now I know that Philtranco does have a bus service (air-con) that leaves Manila (Pasay terminal) at 3:00 pm and drops off the pax right in front of the departure Hall of Clark Airport. This service is meant for pax of Tiger flight whose ETD is 8:45 pm

but not mentioned on their website.

The bus I took left Pasay at 3:00 pm and reached Clark Airport at 5:30 pm whereas the check-in counters only opened at 6:00 pm.

I believe many will find this piece of info useful.

Bus from Manila to Clark Airport

This is indeed very useful since the Philtranco website isn%26#39;t updated while nobody seems to answer their phones.

Bus from Manila to Clark Airport

I was one of those passengers who waited for the check in counter to open. We had to fell in line outside the airport terminal under the sun, and some security staff were very rude. I tried to complain but no one seems to care until I posted my complaint to Phil. Daily Inquirer, a national newspaper. The President of the airport wrote a letter of apology to me and also to the newspaper and said they will do something about. So how was the waiting area? Did they really provide a waiting area with chairs as they promised?

There was a tent with sufficient chairs outside the departure hall. However, the baggage check-in was slow. It took me one and a half hours to clear through the baggage and immigration, yet there was still a long queue behind me. Inside the air-con departure hall, it was quite warm.

Im glad they%26#39;ve made improvements, but theres still room for more. And you%26#39;re right they dont post the 3PM bus to Clark airport in Philtrancos website. Thanks for the info.

Hi.. i also concern about bus to Clark.. So, how could i book in advance for a ticket of Philtranco bus? I was checked on Philtranco website, but couldnt success to make reservation online.. Can you tell me how to get a ticket before i arrive there.. i would like to make sure that everything is ok for my trip..thanks so much..

I don%26#39;t think you can book the Philtranco bus ahead of time.

hi darionsin, if you mean internet booking, then philtranco doesnt have internet booking. But you could get a ticket ahead of time.you could ask your friends from phil. to buy it for you. Dont worry they have 2 buses waiting for passengers at the clark airport so there are seats for everybody. If you%26#39;re going to Clark from Metro Manila just come to the terminal early to get seat.

how about the bus from megamall to clark? do you guys have any info about that? where exactly does the bus stop in megamall? i know the philtranco bus from pasay drops by megamall to pick up more passengers.

It%26#39;s in Building A, the part near Toy Kingdom and the side of the ADB and fronting St Francis Sq. Just ask the guard near Toy Kingdom and the Watson%26#39;s in that area.

Please advise for a budget/cheapest deal for Bohol tour

Hi, my friends and I from Manila are planning to go to Bohol this coming December (19-21), 3D/2N. We haven%26#39;t been booked, still looking for cheapest deals including airfares, accomodation and popular day tours. Any suggetion or advice would be greatly appreciated. My email is mdel.0710@gmail.com. MANY THANKS.

Please advise for a budget/cheapest deal for Bohol tour

You are traveling during peak season and at the same time a weekend, so do not expect to get a real cheap deal. PAL and Cebu Pacific fly to Tagbilaran City (Bohol). Cebu Pacific is normally cheaper but if you can afford to add few pesos, I suggest you take PAL.

If you really want to experience Bohol, stay in Panglao Island. I would recommend three hotels/resorts located in Panglao Island:

    1. Alona Tropical Beach Resort (www.alona-tropical.com)

    2. Lost Horizon Resort (www.losthorizonresort.net)

    3. Alona Kew White Beach Resort (www.alona-kew.com)

Among the three, I prefer staying in Alona Tropical.

Popular day tour would typically include trip to Chocolate Hills, Loboc River, Tarsier Sanctuary, Bohol Bee Farm, Baclayon Church and other places of interest along the way. Your hotel can arrange for your tour but will cost more than arranging it yourself. At the Tagbilaran airport, you will see independent tour operators offering transport services and day tours. You may want to deal with them and negotiate for the terms and price.

I would also like to suggest that you take the morning flight from Manila to Bohol so you can take the day tour right away. Then on the following day, you can enjoy the boat ride to Balicasag Island that includes whale/dolphin watching and snorkling. If time and budget permit, you can hop to Pamilacan Island as well. Then on your last day, enjoy the beach (assuming your return flight is in the afternoon).

May you have a fantastic holiday in Bohol!

Thank you for your reply virgo and green. Your advise would be a great help in planning our trip. Cheers!

    Sent you a private message..

Check it out for information about your trip.

    It helps a lot.

    cheers

    hello!

for starters, december is really the start of the peak season, so you just expect rates to go up.

same as my case, we went there on a peak season (summer this year). but i was really amazed that my expenses for the whole vacation really fit my budget. i just let my handler fix everything so i entrusted him my budget. still, i was able to do the whale watching at pamilacan island and the day tour to chocolate hills which included many other stops.

if u want it a lot cheaper, book at a hotel in the city. il recommend to u the handler that we contacted there. im sure he can help u too.

    Hi dudette 21!

I am planning to go to Bohol with my family in April of 2009. But I am already trying to book as early as now because it is obviously cheaper if you do this early,

I am also trying to get the best deals for an acceptable amount of expense so your idea of a handler appealed to me. (as a mother, practical budgeting is very important. :) )

May I please have a name as to who I could talke to when I call?

    Thanks!

thank you to those who gave helpful tips!

  • Port Barton to El Nido

I shall be in Port Barton after PP. Is the road rough for the hours of bus from Port Barton to El Nido? Can I take a ferry (overnight the best) from the port Barton or Sabang to El nido? If so, any contact means? Thx

    Port Barton to El Nido

    Friends,

Today is January 19 Hong Kong time. I came back from PP, sabang, coconut garden resort of cacnipa island, port barton and san vicente hours ago. I may be able to provide some update (info, not advice) for your consideration. I shall monitor the post in the next couple of days. Happy tripping.

    GaryPaula

    Port Barton to El Nido

Hi, Im just back from Palawan. I heard bad reports about the PP Sabang road but I got the bus and was fine @200 peso. (although very overcrowded with people sitting on the roof! But funny) or you can get a tourist aircon van for more. Some of the road is not finished so it gets a bit bumpy. I imagine in the rain it would have been more muddy and tricky!

I stayed in Greenviews Port Barton (see review) and they own a boat and run it as demand requires. So I was lucky enough to go with their boat between Sabang and Port Barton and then on another day from Port Barton to El Nido (where they have a new resort). This meant I got to avoid all the roads between Sabang and El Nido which I imagine are pretty bad and by the sounds of it close sporadically which doesnt help if you are stuck for time!

Id say though make sure if you go by boat that you get a life jacket and that weather hasn%26#39;t been stormy in general but thats just general water safety. I had no problems and was equiped with decent life jackets!

    honeymoon

Hi all, I am trying to plan a honeymoon in h/kong and philippines. I have ten days in Philippines and would like to spend a chunk of that in Palawan. Can anybody recommend a relaxing itinerary without too much travel ( and with a healthy amount of luxury)and if possible the better hotels to stay in also? Thanks for your help, Colm

    honeymoon

There are great places to visit for a honeymoon in palawan like Amanpulo, Club Noah Isabelle, Club Paradise Resort Coron and so on.

I recommend Elnido resort in Palawan. We had our honeymoon there last year and we had a great time. The Elnido resort will give you plenty things to do like island hopping , unique dining, kayaking to the lagoons, snorkeling, diving, mountain climbing and so on. You will have a wonderfull time.

You can check this website to see travel pictures of

places mention above. It will give you ideas of where to go.

    honeymoon

Hi Colm, Im from Dublin. I%26#39;m just back from a honeymoon in Palawan. I don%26#39;t mind doing a few rustic days in between the luxury though : ) . However for luxury I would go with Lagen Island. I think its nicer than Miniloc. Amanpulo was out of my budget but looks beautiful. If you end up in Sabang Daluyon is the best place to stay, really though for 100 euro was good value. Really enjoyed time in the hotel itself and the beach, though the town is not great but a good base from which to visit the underground river. Booking is essential everywhere I would say. Choice isn%26#39;t as plentiful as Thailand for instance. I did

coron 4 days, then to Lagen (via manila flight) 4 days, el nido town 2 days, port barton 4 days, Sabang 2 days, PP 4 days, manila 3 days. Hibiscus in PP is not a hotel but was very happy with it. Its spotless and spacious. Any more Q just ask. My big tip in BRING CASH. NO ATMS except PP!!!

If you go to the laid back Port Barton the closest to luxury is Summer Homes (concrete little bungalows) who take visa! Port Barton is a tiny place which surprised me on arrival. Not much to do but relax and lie in the sun. But it grew on me!!

trip in puerto prinsesa w/ my friends

we%26#39;ll arrive in puerto prinsesa in late afternoon of jan23 then leave palawan at arnd 12noon of jan27.... can u give me some advise on where to go... island hopping and so on... we also consider to go to el nido... is our stay enough to go there... ive read that its an 8hr drive frm puerto prinsesa... please help us to decide ... thanks

trip in puerto prinsesa w/ my friends

    Mabuhay and Aloha Chubby,

Since you are in Puerto Princesa for only four days I recommend you save El Nido for another time. After you get a Taste of Puerto you may never get to El Nido.

You really only have three full days and I always spend a week. One day is the Underground River, another can be Honda Bay and I really enjoy the Dolphin Watching by banca - that%26#39;s your three days and you haven%26#39;t even done the City Tour. I%26#39;m not big on the downtown part but I love the prison farn and Crocodile Farm/Wildlife center.

Dinners are great - KaLui, Neva%26#39;s and Kickabuch are great - try a differeent one each night. Apologies if I spelled Kickabush wrong - I can never get it straight, but the food is great.

Find the activities at the City Tourism Office official website at www.visitpuertoprincesa.com

you can also find rates of different accommodations from hotels/pension/lodging etc. in this website.

trip in puerto prinsesa w/ my friends

I have just come back from 3 weeks going El Nido to PP and I agree with previous post that I think your time is too short to rush to El Nido. I%26#39;d do as suggested and take your time. Id spend 1 night in Sabang and 2/3 nights in PP. Stay in Daluyon Sabang for comfort (about $100) or to me Dab Dab or Mary%26#39;s looked like the best budget accommodation choices. Staying in Sabang allows you to get to the River early next morning so you dont have to queue. Or do the trip from PP and go back there in the evening.

Then in PP do a day island hopping, just book the standard tour that goes to Snake Island etc think we paid 1200 each incl a great BBQ lunch. A day city tour out to croc farm and butterfly farm and Bakers Hill. Or some time looking around the market or town. You can get nice coffees in Itoy%26#39;s Coffee to relax after too much walking.... and then all restaurants mentioned!

  • Cheap El Nido Accomodation

Hi! We are planning to go to el nido this summer. We are looking for a room or probably a house for rent which can accomodate 16 adults and 10 kids. How true that there is scheduled power/electric interruption in the whole town of el nido? Thanks.

    Cheap El Nido Accomodation

Yes, power outages occur every day in El Nido, and I recall its from around 10am till 6pm.

    Can%26#39;t help with accommodation though.

    Chris

    Cheap El Nido Accomodation

The town%26#39;s electric schedule 12:00nn to 4:00pm, then 6:00pm to 6:00am again. So there is power in El Nido for 16 hours of the day. I think this is ok though since you%26#39;ll probably be island-hopping anyway in the morning and it%26#39;s easy to kill a couple hours in the afternoon.

There are lots of cheap places to stay, but only a few that will have enough rooms to accommodate ALL of your group. If that%26#39;s your plan, you%26#39;ll wanna reserve way ahead.

These are the only affordable places I can think of with enough rooms for 26pax. Beachfront: Marina Garden, Lally and Abet, and Rico%26#39;s. In town: Four Seasons and Cliffside Cottages. Farther in town: Greenview Resort.

Electricity in El Nido is indeed rationed and schedule depends on which zone your hotel / cottage is in. However, most accomodations now have their own generator to make guests more comfortable.

Do you have a specific date in mind for your trip? How many days do you intend to stay?

I don%26#39;t know of any house for rent in el nido. Usually only rooms or cottages which can accomodate 2-3 pax per room.

Since you are quite a party, I suggest you book in advance.

Hi, I just stayed in Greenviews EL Nido. For such a group you would have to book soon I%26#39;m sure. However with kids the beach in town isn%26#39;t as nice and where Greenview is (about 2km-ish out) looks cleaner and has more open space. Think they have some family rooms...

Buy swimwear in Boracay or no?

    Hi all.

I%26#39;ll be in Manila/Makati before going to Boracay. I do need a pair of board shorts, and my girlfriend needs some swimwear too. Is buying that in Boracay going to be a rip-off? Should I try to look in Manila/Makati?

Any suggestions on where to go to get decent brands at relatively cheap prices? (for example, what might a pair of Billabong or Volcom or Rip Curl or... board shorts go for?)

I%26#39;m thinking of buying in the Philippines because I know some Volcom stuff is make in the Philippines.

    Thanks!

    Kevin

Buy swimwear in Boracay or no?

things will be more expensive in Boracay with less choice. You can find some of those at SM , Landmark (if that name is correct) or a host of other shops in Glorietta, but I recall not as cheap as one might think. For swim wear for you girlfriend, if she is Filipina look in Manila/Makati for a great number of choices, especially if she is not used to wearing bathing suits, she will appreciate a greater selection I ASSUME. If you want to get adventurous, you can get knock offs in Divorsoria (spelling).

Buy swimwear in Boracay or no?

You can find swim wear on the island for various places. We have upscale shops selling swim wear which might be slightly more expensive than in Manila and we have cheaper stores. There is quite a good choice of swim wear on the island.

Manila on the other hand might have more choice, but the stores are in several malls. That means you have to sacrifice a whole afternoon or morning to check in the mall, eventually drive to another mall, while here on the island it is relaxing to buy swim wear.

    Up to you....

If you are shopping in upmarket stores in Manila malls it may well be more expensive than Boracay.

There are shops here to suit most budgets and you can find quite inexpensive swimwear and board shorts.

so u want to spend your holiday sun time shopping for suits and once you are there, you will have to settle for what they have. As I recall Landmark had a great selection of stuff at good prices. My family went shopping there before they left.

    ...this is simple

...buy before you come there is more selection

    Rob

More selection? Huh? There are hundreds of shops selling swimwear in Boracay!!! what better selection than there, especially where all the shops are close together. There are both brand name and market priced shops to choose from.

    Ok, thanks folks.

    Guess I%26#39;ll check out Landmark.

I also heard there%26#39;s a decent mall on the way to Tagaytay... in Santa Maria. Speedo outlet.

...for just me ..last minute ...buy it on Boracay

...if I am being dragged around shops on my vacation to look at swimmwear by my wife(thats just not fun)

...any husband who has watched his wife try on 37 bathingsuits to find the ';right'; one can relate to this post

...let her shop (for the perfect suit )before you go there

..dont commit yourself to the shopping event ...lol

...and I have bought sandals,t shirts and umbrellas, kick nacks...on Boracay...but shopping per say is not really a guy thing..

...i think that clarifies what I meant

    Rob

    ...

Rob, thanks for your feedback. It%26#39;s a point well taken.

I%26#39;m actually the one who needs to buy swimwear. My girlfriend already has something. But I%26#39;ll probably get her a pair of beach shorts she can wear over her swimsuit... so she can spend time on that while I%26#39;m looking at my stuff.

Since I am a somewhat plus sized Caucasian, I found a bit of trouble finding clothes in my size on Boracay, I think the largest waist size I saw would fit a 32 inch waist (and I am 36).I found no shorts my size at all...unless you are of the smaller size, I would bring clothes with you.

Shirts - in Canada I wear at XL, in Boracay only 4XL would fit, so the selection is smaller

  • Recommendation for a hairdresser/beauty salon near Ayala Ctr

I will be staying at Dusit Nikko Hotel next week and would like to get a haircut, highlights, ';the works';, etc. Any recommendations?

Recommendation for a hairdresser/beauty salon near Ayala Ctr

you may walk thru 6750 building in Ayala, and check out some salons and other beauty/spa centers located inside.

Recommendation for a hairdresser/beauty salon near Ayala Ctr

    Hi there!

You may take a cab to Powerplant Mall in Rockwell and go to Basement salon at the second floor (Tel: (632)898-2222). Haircuts go for about $25. Look for Manfred (the top guy) or Joseph, they are both good. Highlights could cost between USD70.00 to USD100.00 depending on hairlength, the umber of colors and whether you want a base color or not.

Another good Makati salon is Emphasis Salon, also in Rockwell but it is not inside the mall, rather in a separate building beside Brother%26#39;s Burger, behind UCC Cafe and Santi%26#39;s deli. Relaxing ambience (when there%26#39;s not much people) and quality service as well. Prices similar to Basement. Emphasis Salon- Tel(632) 898-0818/898-0819.

    Enjoy your pampering day! :D

Haha! I think its the first time someone made an inquiry bout that here. But actually yes, Manila has some very good salons and there are some near your hotel worth mention. There are mid-range to the more high end ones. The ones here are those which I go to regularly or at least I%26#39;ve tried before.

Prive - this is a small salon at the 4th level of the Makati Shangri-la. I normally go here for my regular haircut but I can%26#39;t comment on the highlights and stuff since I haven%26#39;t tried those stuff. The one who does my hair is Eddie (and he%26#39;s good). I%26#39;ve seen he does those highlights and stuff too. From what I%26#39;ve heard its a bit pricey, though I%26#39;m sure compared to what you pay there it is still cheap here. Their phone is 8135002. As their place is small, it can get a bit crowded specially on weekends and in the afternoons during weekdays.

Emphasis Salon - this one is at the basement of the Manila Peninsula, which is the hotel across the Shangri-la (across Ayala). They have a bigger space, and a really friendly staff. I go there for grooming and treatments and ocassional pampering or if the other salon is just too crowded and noisy. They have a separate area for men and women which I like, since for women it is a common area, unlike for men - they give us our own cubicle with our own tv (hahaha). There are times I treat my mom here for a hair and scalp treatment/massage together with a foot spa and manicure. I guess she likes it so much cause she really can sleep during the process as the place can be relaxing. Their number is 8123456 and ask to be connected to Emphasis Salon.

Toni and Guy - I actually don%26#39;t know if this is still open, but it is at the ground floor of 6750, beside Shangri-la. Went there twice for a haircut. For me it was nothing special, though I%26#39;ve heard a lot of nice reviews about them. I never went back though. Maybe because I%26#39;ve established a better rapport with the above places.

These I guess are the top 3 in the area (from a guy%26#39;s point of view that is). There are other (less pricey) salons in the area though I won%26#39;t write on anything I haven%26#39;t actually experienced. I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;ll be some more responses hopefully from female TAs here.

As for the three I%26#39;ve listed above, if you have time, better call them up first or better yet visit them and get a feel for which place you might like best. They all have different stylists who charges differently depending on their ';level';. You can walk from Dusit through the Glorietta mall to get to these places in comfort.

Oh, the Emphasis Salon I mentioned is a branch closer to your hotel (bout 10-15 minutes walk). But if you have time, do check out the Rockwell branch picolita mentioned above (which is their main branch) about 15 minutes by cab from your hotel with the usual Makati traffic. Travel time from there back to your hotel is much longer though (since traffic is heavier specially in the afternoon).

    Hello again!

I think the question is very valid :P since every girl needs to de-stress and prettify herself :-)

Just to say that the salons I mentioned are in my view, one of the 2 best in Manila although on the expensive side.. But I think its best you not take risks with your hair, specially for hair color on the cheaper salons since it could turn out brassy (yikes!)

You didn%26#39;t mention if you are Filipino or Caucasian, but in any case, if you are blonde or light and fine haired, the 2 salons I mentioned above (Basement and Emphasis) would still know what to do.

Another good salon for stylish haircuts is Propaganda which is located at the Greenbelt Mall- 3rd Level (sort of near your hotel, walkable). I am not sure if they are experts in coloring but this is a quality salon, so I would probably trust them too. You can look for Jing Monis. Tel. 893-4098. Haircut is about USD25.00 or P1,200 more or less same as the ones I mentioned above.

    Enjoy!

Yup! Very valid indeed! Its actually a refreshing query far different from the usual questions in the forums.

    Good post picolita! :)

    thanks! ;-) (kikay!)

Wow! Thanks so much for all the valuable informaton! I%26#39;ll be arriving there on Sunday morning. I will be looking for a church to go to in the morning, then spend the rest of the day being pampered. I will try to make the appointments while I am here is San Francisco.

One question: Can you advise regarding tipping etiquette for attendants, cutters, hair colorist, manicurist/pedicurist, etc.?

    Hiya! Me again :-)

About churches, did you mean Catholic? You can go to Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park. You can take a cab from your hotel- it should take around 5 minutes, maybe you should make the cabbie wait if you decide to go here cos you might get stuck, since this a resdential neighborhood. there is a 10:30 am mass and a 12 noon mass. if you wish to go earlier I think there is 9 am one, but am not completely sure.

The interesting thing is, you can also attend mass at mall. Only in the Philippines. There is mass in Greenbelt Chapel, though I am not familiar with schedule. There is also a chapel at Rockwell at the 4th floor if ever you decide to go to Basement Salon. Mass schedule is 9:30am, 11am, 4:30pm, 6pm and 7:10.

About salon tipping... Hmmmm depends how happy you are. But the normal tip for the stylist is about P100.00, could be more if you are really happy. For the attendants/manicurist/pedicurist P50 should be enough per person, could be more, could be less. On a sidenote: Emphasis pedicures are nice, the manicurists are good, plus if you like painting your toes, they have such a wide variety of shades to chose from. (Ok i sound like a ditz now) :P

But really, have fun! Im sure you will save a lot by having all your stuff done here.

Thanks for the %26#39;tipping tips%26#39;, Piccolita. I feel armed with so much information, I already feel relaxed just thinking about it.

By the way, I am looking for Christian church. I am %26#39;flip%26#39; but not Catholic...went to Union High School of Manila (under Phil Christian U), but have been away for so long, I honestly do not remember how much I tipped or even if I tipped at all when I was there... :(

    Trikes

How noisy are the trikes on Boracay? I have not been there for 6 years and there were no trikes back then.

    Trikes

there were trikes there 6 years ago. they are noisy but mostly confined to the main road.

    Trikes

Of course there were trikes 6 years ago!!!

I first visited Boracay in 1991. I know that there are many others around who can quote earlier dates, but that%26#39;s mine. My memory from 1991 is that there were no trikes. Zero. Not one. It was wonderful.

I came here to live in 1996. There were way too many trikes by then. Dirty. Noisy. Smelly. Worse than the trikes themselves, though, were the trike drivers.

Now, of course, it is much worse.

Boracaybill is correct: no tricycles in 1991. Maybe a handfull of motorbikes. Transportation was mainly by foot with no noise, cellphones, radios, karaokes, etc. To hear moderate loud music you had to go to the old Beachcomber or Sand Bar. Same with cold beers = not readily available. Tricycles proliferated by the end of the 90%26#39;s and numbers are growing. In 2002 the municipal council created an ordinance to limit the number of tricycles and not to approve any new applications. A little lobbying by the tricycle group, a reminder that in a year elections are coming up, made the resolve of the political leaders disappear and the ordinance was amended. Since then the number of motorized vehicles on the island is growing exponential.

It shows that I did drink too many San Migs. not to notice trikes. We stayed at the ill fated Michelles Bungalows. It was a top spot. In we 88 stayed at Lorenzos near Sundowner Restaurant. My fondest memories are that we walked everywhere and that is what made it so special. I have read of the road and that disappoints me. Hope to be there this year.

    What's special in Tagaytay?

How much time do I need in Tagaytay? Is 1/2 a day enough? Right now, my list of things to see:

Taal Volcano (has anyone gone up to the top? worth it?)

    Flower Farm

Palace / People%26#39;s Park in the Sky (some said this is a waste of time)

City Market (optional... seen enough markets)

    Mushroom Burger

    Leslie%26#39;s

Is there anything I should add or take off my list?

    Thanks!

    Kevin

    What's special in Tagaytay?

    hi,

Usually a day trip is enough (if you are coming from Manila), but if you are going to the Taal Volcano then that will probably take half day since you need to ride a small boat. So overnight accomodation is recommended. I haven%26#39;t really been there but they said that if you are going to hike there, don%26#39;t take the donkey.

Palace in the sky is just ok, nothing too special. I would add to my list Picnic grove, there%26#39;s an eco-trail there and ziplining. I%26#39;ve seen some youtube videos of the ziplining, seems a bit slow but it%26#39;s something to try.

For a great view of Taal volcano, you can go to the Taal Vista Lodge and there%26#39;s no entrance fee :)

    hope this helps

    Jenny

    What's special in Tagaytay?

As stated above, you can easily spend half your day going up Taal Volcano. You can allot a whole day for Tagaytay, or better yet, stay overnight so you%26#39;ll be more relaxed.

You might also want to visit the place of the Good Shepherd Sisters. It%26#39;s a nice, serene place and you can buy freshly made jams or peanut brittle -- these are quite popular even among locals.

People%26#39;s Park in the Sky is so-so. Nothing to write home about. :)

    Hope that helped.

Is Taal Vista Lodge the same as Taal Vista Hotel?

I heard that unlike before, only guests of the hotel are allowed in the area for the view of Taal. Is this true and if yes I wonder how they implement that.

    Haven%26#39;t been there for years.

Mito's Place--does anyone have any feedback?

I am planning a two week vacation to Boracay in August and I am still looking for a place to stay. I saw Mito%26#39;s Place web site...and their hotel looks nice. I like that it is on White Beach near Station 1, and it has ocean-view rooms which are in my price range. It also is closer to town than Lorenzo South. The rooms look very nice and the location is convenient. But I can not find any reviews of Mito%26#39;s Place. Is it in a fairly quiet location? Do they give good service? Are the rooms really as nice as they look on their web site? i would appreciate any info about Mito%26#39;s Place. Salamat...ingat ka...

Mito's Place--does anyone have any feedback?

Did you stay here?, the website makes it look really nice.

Mito's Place--does anyone have any feedback?

Hi Richard...We did not stay at Mito%26#39;s Place because we simply could not find any reviews or other information about it...other than their web site. Instead, we stayed all 12 nights at Friday%26#39;s Resort...and we are very happy that we did. We walked by Mito%26#39;s Place several times while strolling along White Beach, and we were relieved that we did not stay there. While their low-season price and their rooms were attractive on their web site, Mito%26#39;s is in a poor location, and their building was sandwiched in closely between other buildings in a busy area of Station 1/Station 2. They had a four meter tall wind screen erected between their building and the beach which obscured any view from their rooms. Worse, there was nowhere to enjoy the beach in front of Mito%26#39;s...they didn%26#39;t even have any beach chairs. Even if there were beach chairs, you would have been sitting right in the middle of all the beach traffic. In contrast, we found everything that we were looking for (except price) at Friday%26#39;s. The reviews of Friday%26#39;s does not do it justice. Friday%26#39;s has the best location on the island...the best beach...the best area to enjoy the beach...the best beach chairs...great service at all levels...a restaurant that will make you forget about going into town to eat...fun cultural shows at dinner on Monday and Friday...an easy stroll along the beach to go into town...or a quick tricycle ride on one of the tricycles that are always available at Friday%26#39;s gate. We stayed in a Premier room (#4...on the upper floor...near the beach...with a beach view from the veranda...a wonderful location). I travel for business occasionally in the U.S. and I am accustomed to staying at mid-price places like Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, etc., at prices between $90-$150. Friday%26#39;s rooms easily reached this level of comfort and cleanliness, but I would not rate them at a five-star level. The rooms were fine for us. We were looking for a quiet and comfortable place to enjoy our honeymoon...and Friday%26#39;s was fabulous for us. Also, Friday%26#39;s will arrange any activity for you. Among other things, we enjoyed the banca tour around the island. The in-room massage has our highest recommendation. Of course, it all depends on what kind of experience you are looking for...and at what price. Mito%26#39;s would have been a big disappointment for us.

    Thanks for the reply.

So it looks as though that ones off the list :-(

I%26#39;ll just keep looking I suppose. Fridays seems a bit above my budget, although it does look nice though.

%26#39;Boracay Beach Club%26#39; looks favourite at the moment, near to the beach, has a pool and about the right price, but I%26#39;m still trying to decide.

Hi again Richard...Did I forget to mention how romantic Friday%26#39;s is? Without a doubt, from our experience, it is the most romantic setting on the island. If you are looking for a great place for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway of any sort, it would be well worth your while to find it within your budget to stay at Friday%26#39;s for at least part of your vacation. They have low-season rates as well as some promos on their web site. It would be a shame to travel all the way to Boracay and not stay on the beach...it is just not the same experience. Also, we thought we would need a pool too...but once we were on the beach and took our first swim in the beautiful aqua water...that was it...no pool necessary. I will tell you that Friday%26#39;s was over our budget too, but we have absolutely no regrets, and would do it all over again. As for Boracay Beach Club, I would have to go back to the reviews in order to jog my memory of where it is located and what our impression of it was when we saw it in person...I%26#39;ll check with my wife too...she is better at remembering these things than I am. I%26#39;m sure that we ruled it out because it is not on the beach. Another thing that you need to be careful about regarding location is that many of the resorts (including those directly on the beach) are located on the road into town. Avoid these a places at all costs as the road is very noisy with tricycles, trucks, honking horns, etc. I realize that I sound like an ad for Friday%26#39;s, but we really enjoyed it. It was my first time to Boracay...and my wife%26#39;s third time (her first time at Friday%26#39;s).

I suggest Seawind or Pearl of the pacific which are also located at Station 1 but are much cheaper compared to Fridays. We passed by their resorts and there is less traffic compared to Station 2 and 3.

I remember Pearl give us a good discount when we inquired from them but we did not stay there because they dont have good reviews of their resort. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, then choose a resort at Station 1 because the noise at Station 2 are really annoying especially at night....and there are less vendors at Station 1.

Me and my husband had a wonderful time at Fridays. We expected a rainy season when we went there last August..but we were blessed with good weather for all 12 nights of our stay there..it was a good surprise for our honeymoon. Also, it was good that we went there during low season because there are less people on the beach. The staff of Fridays also made sure that there are no vendors on there beach area and you will feel secure with the guards on duty 24 hours. We were able to appreciate this fact when we strolled to Station 2 and 3 and every minute, one vendor will approach you to sell anything, and I wonder if one can still relax with them around.

I can say that we really had a perfect honeymoon in boracay, perfect location, great food and very romantic setting..

    Hi guys,

Why don%26#39;t you check out Two Seasons? It%26#39;s close to Fridays (that means its in a good location), is brand new (has modern minimalist architecture), and has a good restaurant. It%26#39;s about USD 150 / night but I think this will make it less expensive than Friday%26#39;s, depending on the time of year. It%26#39;s a lot smaller also than Friday%26#39;s (it%26#39;s a small boutique hotel), but that makes it good if you like watching crowds gathered in front of the beach in the afternoon.

If you want top notch accommodations then without a doubt Discovery Shores is the best choice. It%26#39;s big, brand new and definitely 5 star. Be prepared to shell out Usd 300 per night though. But if this is your honeymoon you%26#39;re planning then that will be money well spent.

Hey about Mito%26#39;s Place. This is a resort that you go to with the guys. Its decent, clean and the staff are friendly. The rates are cheap because it%26#39;s family owned. Its also brand new but of course its no Friday%26#39;s, Two SEasons nor Discovery Shores. We stayed in this place just to have a place to sleep, so for that I think Mito%26#39;s delivered.

Anyway, hope this piece helps. Good luck!

  • Beach resort

Been to Bali and Thailand several times, looking for somewhere different. Can anyone suggest a beach resort in Philippines? Family group of around 10 people, no teenagers or children and like a relaxing holiday with great beach and pools and prefer to eat out of resort at night. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Kath

    Beach resort

sounds like boracay to me. you might want to look into palawan as well but dining choices might be more limited. if budget is not an issue, i%26#39;d recommend el nido resorts.

    Beach resort

    KatSale

My personal favourite is Alona Beach, Panglao Island which is connected by a causeway and 30 minutes by Taxi (cost P450 or so each way) from Tagbilaran.

To get there fly from Melbourne to Singapore on Singapore Airlines (the overnight 0105 hours flight connects, but if you want a stopover book the popular transit hotel at Chnagi Airport, a destination in itself), then connect to the 0900 or so daily SilkAir flight to Cebu, and then either fly or (more frequently) catch a fast ferry from Cebu Port across the bridge from Mactan Island on which the airport is situated to Tagbilaran City.

The www.singaporeair.com Internet site has fares that in some cases are cheaper than going through travel agents. Make sure you sign up to KrisFlyer frequent flyer program. SQ planes unlike QANTAS and Phil Airlines have good at-seat entertainment.

Take a taxi from airport to Cebu Port by walking outside the terminal and looking for a set of stairs. Insist on the meter being on (most drivers now do this).

There are three competing fast ferry companies: SuperFerry, OceanJet and Weesam Express, with regular departures listed on a website a Filipino gent has established. Fare is reasonable. You can buy tickets at the ferry wharves.

Alona Beach has a good range of acooomdation searchable on TA, and you can take tours for dolphin watching and snorkelling to Balicasag Island (by private %26#39;banca%26#39; - boat seating up to 6) and to Chocolate Hills, Baclayan Church, Loboc River cruise, Hinuntungan Cave and the very cute small tarsiers. Cost of each tour is about P2000 (may have gone up slightly): Loboc River cruise is about P300 per person including a buffet lunch and a soft drink.

If flying ex Manila, Cebu Pacific (newer A320 planes) and Philippine Airlines have about seven departures a day each; if flying ex Cebu, each now has one daily departure (at different times). Domestic fares are generally cheap.

At Alona Beach there are numerous restaurants along the beach, but it%26#39;s probably a quieter atmosphere than Boracay.

The Panglao Island/ Bohol Island tourist attractions are all listed on TA under %26#39;Bohol attractions%26#39;, so search using those parameters.

HI Kate, small world i am from Sale also.

I highly recomend staying at Plantation Bay in Cebu , about 20 minutes from the Cebu Intl. Airport, its very expensive, but even for just a few nights i highly recommend staying there, you will not regret it.

    Kate and Kingant

It%26#39;s possible to combine Plantation Bay on Mactan Island, Cebu near its international airport with a stay at Alona Beach.

The cheapest way is to fly to Manila with Singapore Airlines on the 0105 flight ex Melbourne, change in Singapore and arrive Manila at about 1315. Allow at least three hours for a connection (transfer from Terminal 1 to newer Terminal 3) and fly Cebu Pacific to Cebu, then stay at Plantation Bay. This is cheaper than flying direct to Cebu with SIA subsidiary SilkAir, however the latter is quicker.

Then after say three days, take a taxi to Cebu Port and transfer using fast ferries and a taxi from Tagbilaran as per my previous post to get to Alona Beach, Panglao Island.

Then fly Tagbilaran - Manila on Cebu Pacific when you wish to, and maybe stay a night or two in Manila to experience Intramuros, the wonderful Sofitel Phillipine Plaze Hotel or Hyatt Ermita Hotel%26#39;s evening buffets (latter includes unlimited beer and soft drinks and is a bit cheaper, but Phil Plaza one has bigger selection of food).

For a reasonably priced hotel the newish Casa Bocobo Hotel in Ermita looks good though I tend to use Hotel Kimberly. It%26#39;s closer to Robinsons Place Mall but Casa Bocobo is closer to Manila Ocean World aquarium and to Intramuros%26#39;s tourist attractions.

I%26#39;d recommend Boracay as a good all-round destination with something for everyone. As well as beautiful beaches, there are plenty of activities and watersports, as well as a friendly nightlife scene and plenty of decent dining options.

  • Bringing PETS to bora

    hi!

i was just wondering, are there resorts which allow guests to bring their (small) dogs? Thanks!!

    =)

    Chris

    Bringing PETS to bora

I was surprised to learn on this forum recently that quite a lot of resorts %26amp; hotels allow pets. I%26#39;ll see if I can find that thread for you.

Trip Adviser member Bruhilda was here recently with her little dachshund - no doubt she%26#39;ll be happy to give you some advise if she spots this posting.

There%26#39;s a lively debate about it here:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294260-i6038-k682…

please let hotel know you plan to take dog to hotel as they dont have to let you in with one and dont have to give you a refund I would think. I am really not sure what would happen if you just showed up wtih a dog but it could be a disaster. Ask first.

hi cquant! i will be willing to help you out, but i will appreciate it if we could chat at ym instead. there are a lot of contributors here that aren%26#39;t so appreciative of dogs going to boracay. i can advice you on what hotel, airlines as well as the documentations you need before leaving manila, and vice versa.

just text me at 0916-7384529 if you want to chat so i could text you my yahoo id

or just contact Turtle INN, they allow dogs I think from past forum.

Lots of places do, apparantly, but of course you have to let them know in advance.

There%26#39;s some useful advice from a certain DuxyDdachshund posted on this thread:

    4. Nigi Nigi Nunoos

    5. Villa de Oro

bohol first, cebu next or vice versa ?

    hi...

am just wondering whats a better travel plan ...go to bohol first then ferry to cebu or vice versa ? its a family trip with sibling balikbayans...will take the trip around 3rd week of march 2009..

any suggestions as to tour packages in bohol ?

would appreciate all the help and advice...

    thanks

    anna

bohol first, cebu next or vice versa ?

You will pay about P2200 per six-person banca for tours to Balicasag Island including dolphins and snorkelling (start at 0530) and similar for the land 4 wheel driver tour (per 4WD, not per person) to Chocolate Hills, Baclayon Church, tarsiers and so on with an extra P300 or so per person for the Loboc River lunch.

I suggest flying or taking a ferry to Tagbilaran first: if flying go with Cebu Pacific, then staying at the wonderful Alona Beach (all budgets catered for), taking the fast ferry (Weesam, OceanJet or SuperFerry) to Cebu, then staying there or on Mactan and catching a ferry or plane back to Manila after shopping in Colon Street, at SM Mall Cebu or Ayala Centre.

Look up %26#39;Bohol attractions%26#39; to see what the two day tours encompass.

how can i book cebu pacific from uk?

is there a travel site who deals in this airline?

    regards neill

    booking cebu pacific from uk?

    Hi there

You haven%26#39;t mentioned if you have tried to use their website, but this is the best way to book. Google flycebuspacific and you%26#39;ll find it. It doesn%26#39;t accept some uk credit cards, but barclaycard works....

    good luck

    booking cebu pacific from uk?

    I had the same problem.

The web site wouldn%26#39;t accept my credit card and a call to the service centre confirmed credit cards issued outside the philippines were not accepted.

When we arrived in manila in november 08, i had to go to a booking office and queued for about 90 minutes to get the flights booked. The same credit card was accepted in about 30 seconds.

    The flights themselves were good.

    UN Lrt to US Embassy

Hi. Pls. provide info on how to go to US Embassy from UN LRT Station? Is there any jeep going to Roxas Blvd from the station? Thanks.

    UN Lrt to US Embassy

there no jeep fr. UN station to US embassy, best way is to take a pedicab

    UN Lrt to US Embassy

Best way from any lrt station to US Embassy?

The best (for me) way is from UN LRT Sta. Straight through the UN Ave is the US Embassy by the bay. Take a leisurely 20 minutes walk and enjoy the scene along the way.

There are plenty of roadworks along UN Avenue, so there%26#39;s regular traffic in the area, specially in the portion infront of Manila Doctor%26#39;s Hospital and the police station.

I%26#39;d want to suggest taking a quick cab ride (if a driver will take you). Yes a sad option would be to take a pedicab til the corner of UN Avenue and Roxas Boulevard (where the two starbucks branches are). But if the weather is fine, I%26#39;d agree with one of the posts above. Take a leisurely stroll along UN Avenue.

Thanks guys. How much would a pedicab costs?

    Allow 50 pesos budget

    Thanks.

  • 1st timer

I will be in boracay for the 1st time this coming october. Im looking for a room which is nice %26amp; clean and preferably with AC %26amp; TV. Im reading the boracay forum on this site and found out many interesting places but still Im undecided due to budget constraints. 1 option I have is Bamboo resort, any reactions please. 1k to 1.5k is my budget for accommodations can you help guys?

    1st timer

If you are willing to pay P1500 you can find a nicer place than that. The location is pretty crappy.

Some better options in that price bracket include Dave%26#39;s, Turtle Inn, Tonglen, Isla Gecko, Little Corner of Italy, Marzon Resort and El Centro.

    1st timer

    check www.turtleinnboracay.com

    we%26#39;ll stay there this mid-october.

thanks for the info guys! much appreciated... another thing how bout Arock resort and blue coral? any feedback on this resorts... daves straw hat is my choice but still looking forward to others... any comment sirenna i know ur the expert hehehe

    THANKS!!!! enjoy!!!!

Personally I%26#39;d go with Blue Coral - it%26#39;s beachfront and in a much better location than A-Rock.

    Hi sirenna,

Your such a big help. Could you help me to decide where we can stay at best w/ my wife - daves, villa de oro, boracay courtyard or blue coral. Thank yo so much...

    Hi Sirenna,

Im sorry please include Tonglen in my list. Is tonglen far from the beach? Again, thanks!

Tonglen isn%26#39;t far from the beach - just a couple of minutes walk. I%26#39;m afraid I don%26#39;t know anything about Boracay Courtyard, so I can help with that.

Villa de Oro is too noisy for me - they play too-loud music there, especially around dinner time.

I%26#39;d be happy to stay at either Dave%26#39;s, Blue Coral or Tonglen, but bear in mind only Blue Coral is beachfront. The others are just a short walk away. The choice is yours - it%26#39;s your vacation! Have you had a good look at thier websites?

Yup I%26#39;ve seen their sites. Thanks for the info you gave, uve been such a big help on this forum.

    Sirenna RULES!!! =)

@ love boracay.... did you paid in full for your accommodation in turtle inn? maybe I will stay there also... thanks!

    Boracay - Jan 24-28, Station 1 - anyone else?

Do they celebrate Chinese New Year in French Polynesia? ;)

Use the REAL name! Google ';Bora'; and you don%26#39;t get any info about Boracay whatsoever!

Boracaynons are trying to discourage the use of this abbreviation.

    Villa de Oro

    hi there,

does anyone know if there%26#39;s hot and cold showers in villa de oro%26#39;s bathrooms? their rates look good on the internet, but i%26#39;m not so sure if they do have hot and cold showers.

also, would you really recommend this place?

    thanks!

    ~christine

    Villa de Oro

For sure they%26#39;ll have a cold shower! The hot one might be lacking though. It%26#39;s interesting that they don%26#39;t mention it on their website - most places list their facilities. Nearby El Centro is offering some good deals, and has hot showers. You could also look up Boracay Beach Chalets to compare prices.

    Villa de Oro

thanks Sirenna! I%26#39;ve stayed at the suite in Boracay Beach Chalets so I know :) and the room is great there too! But I was interested in Villa de Oro because the rates are really cheap.. hehe..

    thanks again for the advise!

The cottages and garden look OK from the outside, but what puts me off that place is the loud music they play at sunset. It kind of ruins the atmosphere for me.

Do not Stay At Villa De oro. especially if you are filipino Citizen, people here do not prioritize filipino, as if ther aren%26#39;t one..Nothing much interested on this resort, it is not true that is a WIFI there. NO Refrigerator, Mini Tables for your things No hanger for your Clothes, People are so annoying, Snobbish! i experienced this only yesterdar. SO beware, enough reason for us to move to other beach resort..

    Zuzuni Boracay

Hi. Is it true that all 4 rooms of Zuzuni comes with a bag full of kerastese products?

    Good eats In Boracay?

Hey guys! Can u recommend some good food places in Boracay? Nothing high-end, but something good, filling, and authentic to whatever style of cuisine they are representing.

Also, about how much per person is it usually to eat at those places?

    Thanks!

    Good eats In Boracay?

If you like grilled chicken, there%26#39;s a lot of Andok%26#39;s barbeque. They also have other grilled food but chicken is the most requested menu. They are very cheap also, like less than $1 or so for one item. There%26#39;s a lot of eatery at D%26#39;Mall and Andok%26#39;s is one of them. Others are specialty restaurants that cater to European and Korean tastes. If you want authentic Filipino food, check with your resorts because most of them are experts on that area.

    Good eats In Boracay?

I have put together a collection of tips and photographs of restaurants in Boracay Island which may answer your question - click the link below.

    members.virtualtourist.com/m/8ab27/157917/2/

i would recommend island chicken inasal in d%26#39; mall over the andoks chicken.

Thanks! I%26#39;ll make sure to check those out!

    1. jony%26#39;s(station 1) and maniana(between stn 1 and 2) srves good mexican food. go to chill out at jony%26#39;s for happy hour (sunset...few drinks and their nacho grande).

    2. there%26#39;s a new greek resto at d%26#39;mall its very small and its hidden i just forgot the name...its also good i think the name is cyma

    3. if you plan to have white house cook food..try the fish called managat tell them to buy it for you at the market have it grilled. there chicken bar-b-q is also good

( i suggest if you want to pig out on seafood just do it at the resort let them buy everything at the market..prawns, oysters, crabs etc...it%26#39;ll be cheaper just give them instruction to buy the fresh ones) have them set it up on the beach. you can also have them buy lechon.

    4. aria resto at d%26#39;mall for italian food.

    5. cocomangas pizza is also good

    6. buffet at fridays

    7. gastoff at d%26#39;mall baby back ribs

    8. jammers burger at d%26#39;mall

    9. boracay steak house for their breakfast omelette

10 badoy%26#39;s plsce (i thinks its called jimsters) at diniwid beach..its where nami is before you go up the hotel its by the beach they serve very good and huge crabs.

    11. chori or longaniza sandwich before heading back to the resrt to wrap up the night you%26#39;ll seee them by the beach usually around pier 1

    12. indian food at true food

I%26#39;m salivating just looking at ^ your list!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Andoks is nothing to write home about - it%26#39;s just cheap fried chicken!

There are some great restaurants in the new wing of the mall:-

*Lemon cafe (sandwiches, salads, pastries etc)

    *Cyma (excellent Greek food)

    *Upper Crust (steak, seafood, international)

*Rumbas (English Pub style food, curries etc)

    *Ole (delicious Spanish Tapas)

*Bite Club (possibly the biggest and best burgers in Boracay)

There%26#39;s even a new place serving Jamaican patties! you%26#39;ll be spoilt for choice.

My favourite Mexican is Manana, towards station 1.

For some more detailed reviews and photos, check the link to my webpage (in the post above).
